Jack lived in a pleasant condominium community with comfortable residences set in duplexes on tree-lined streets complete with statuesque palm trees. The community was located in a suburb of San Diego. In his carport was a vintage car from a few decades earlier, one of his favorite possessions and that he literally kept under wraps to best protect its well maintained and preserved condition.
Divorced, Jack’s ex-wife lives out of state as do his two daughters. With that said, Jack had a cordial relationship with his former spouse, talked to his daughters regularly, and saw his children in person throughout any given year.
As is the case with many families in this day and age, and despite the availability of tremendous communication technologies. from time-to-time, several days would pass during which Jack didn’t have contact with one or another of his daughters or his ex-wife. Such was the case at the end of the summer and the beginning of fall 2023.
After this passage of time, which was less than a week at best, Jack’s daughters and wife visited and realized none of them had spoken with the name for a few days. No one was precisely certain when was the last time they spoke with Jack. At this juncture, the trio of women began a concerted effort to connect with Jack and failed in that endeavor.
At this point in time, Jack’s family contacted local police in San Diego. The family requested that the police undertake a welfare check at Jack’s residence. A welfare check, also known as a wellness check, is a visit or contact made by authorities like the police to ensure the well-being and safety of an individual. It is typically done in response to concerns about the person’s physical or mental health, or when their whereabouts are unknown. When the police came to the residence, Jack did not respond to their ringing the doorbell and knocking on the door. The police had the permission of Jack’s daughters to enter the home, which they did. Nearly immediately, they found Jack’s remains on the floor of a bathroom in the residence. It was clear upon immediate, cursory examination of the scene that Jack had been dead for a matter of three or four days.
Ultimately, the county coroner determined that Jack in fact had been deceased for approximately three days. Moreover, the medical examiner concluded that the cause of death was a heart attack.
